Entrance to Israel Museum |
Today our whole Jerusalem team experienced the treasures of the Israel Museum in West Jerusalem. It is the largest cultural institution in Israel, with nearly 500,000 objects. Here are a few of my favorite images:
Canaanite wall bracket, 13th century BC |
Mural recalls Babylonian conquest of Jerusalem, 586 BC |
Ossuary, 1st century AD |
Roman mosaic, 3rd century AD |
Iridescent jug, 4th century AD |
The museum also has an extensive collection of Jewish art and life, and replicas of synagogues. The art galleries feature contemporary artists, art from Asia, Africa, and the Americas, and European masters.
1645 painting by Flemish artist Jacob Jordaens |
Man on a horse by Colombian Fernando Botero |
The museum grounds offer additional attractions. There is a sculpture garden, the white-domed Shrine of the Book with the Dead Sea scrolls, and a scale model of ancient Jerusalem at its peak in 66 AD, shortly before its destruction by the Romans.
